Help Maine fishermen fight hunger in our communities

In 2019, over 180,000 people in Maine struggled with food insecurity. In 2020, with the onset of COVID-19 and the economic collapse, that number may be closer 250,000 Mainers struggling to get access to food.

At the same time, fishermen and fishing businesses are struggling to survive. Prices for groundfish (cod, haddock, flounders) have collapsed, with the value of fish landed in Portland down by an astounding 73% from the five-year average. This has caused many fishermen to stay tied to the dock, putting the future of Maine’s working waterfront, and a way of life, at risk.

Seafood is our shared opportunity. In collaboration with local food processors, MCFA’s goal is to provide 5,000 pounds of fish per week to be distributed to food banks and local schools to combat food insecurity in Maine. MCFA has received an anonymous donation to kickstart this program, but we need help from YOU to make it a real and impactful success.

Together, we can provide good, healthy, sustainable seafood to thousands of Mainers in need while also supporting local fishermen and Maine’s working waterfront.
